The steel for low-temperature transport tanks: DILLINAL

Exceptionally high safety levels, combined with lightweight designs, are necessary for transportation of liquefied gases by road and rail. DILLINAL 460/630, a steel developed specifically for such applications, thus has not only a defined yield strength, but also a particularly high tensile strength and a high toughness at low temperatures. The toughness of DILLINAL 460/630 NL has been verified down to -40° C. DILLINAL 460/630 is a normalized fine-grained structural steel which not only meets, but in fact betters, the standards compiled for such steels in EN 10028-3.2003 and the corresponding codes of practice.

The same also applies to workability. DILLINAL 460/630 has good suitability for hot and cold forming, and for thermal cutting and welding. Since this steel is generally used in thicknesses of only 8 to 20 millimeter, however, particularly careful attention to temperature control is required during welding, and subsequent tempering should be included if necessary.
