The steel for lightweight pressure vessels: DIROS

DIROS 500 has been developed for material-saving construction of heavily load-exposed pressure vessels. In addition to its high mechanical strength, it is also notable for its extremely good low-temperature toughness. It is used, for example, in the construction of pressure vessels integrated into offshore structures. DIROS is available in two variants - DIROS 500 HT, designed for maximum mechanical strength, and DIROS 500 S, combining high mechanical strength with extra sour-gas resistance. This combination also meets the requirements of NACE MR 0175.

DIROS 500 is a vacuum-treated, water-quenched and tempered fine-grained structural steel and is a further development of the P500Q grade standardized in EN 10028, Part 6:2003 and ASTM/ASME Steel A/SA 533 Type C. Like all Dillinger Hütte GTS steels, DIROS 500 offers extremely good workability. It must be noted, however, that hot forming in the tempering temperature range or above necessitates repeat water-quenching and tempering (Q+T).
