Excavating oil sand using DILLIMAX

In the context of the Canadian oil sand project, Dillinger Hütte GTS overspans individual industries - not only the vessel steel, but also the steel for a new excavator for handling of oil sand, were supplied from Dillingen. The RH 400 is the world's largest hydraulic excavator, with a width of 8.6 meters, a height of 11.5 meters and a length, with the boom extended, of 24.9 meters.

Its shovel capacity is 42 cubic meters, thus enabling the RH 400 to move 5,000 to 8,000 tonnes of oil sand per hour. All the heavy-plate components on this machine came originally from Dillinger Hütte GTS, including parts made from high-tensile, water-quenched and tempered DILLIMAX. This steel, with its lightweight properties, is the reason that the RH 400, despite its enormous size, weighs "only" 800 tonnes.
