The construction of the world’s second highest skyscraper shall be finished at the beginning of 2008. 101 stories will then rise 492 m into the skyline of Shanghai’s financial centre.
The world-famous architecture firm, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates PC, and the local company, East China Architectural Design & Research Institute Co. Ltd, were responsible for designing this prestigious project, which also symbolically demonstrates China’s financial power. The design of the building is modern, and – despite the giant dimensions – shows architectural lightness. These are quite often perfect prerequisites for high-tech solutions made of steel heavy plates. The base structure is still made of an inner concrete core, but the four mega-pillars in the corners which are connected to each other with truss belts and stiffening elements as well as to the core, need a great amount of steel plates. Special heavy plates with the highest demand on quality are needed for the particularly critical areas of this sophisticated construction. Dillinger Hütte GTS delivered 23,000 tonnes of heavy plates for these areas. The plates still had to be 100 mm thick, even when the higher-strength DI-MC 460 brand steel is used. The first deliveries were already carried out in 2004; the final delivery began its shipment in June 2006, starting at the Saarhafen harbour in Dillingen via Antwerp to China. The construction of this giant is already far advanced. Thus, this outstanding project can be lined up to the numerous references for the application of high-performance plates of Dillinger Hütte in steel engineering throughout the world.
