Dillinger heavy plate for the extension of Worcester's Carrington Bridge

Innovative, lean, sustainable and cost-effective... DIWETEN 460+M makes it possible!

As part of an impressive infrastructure project in Worcester, England, one of the busiest roads, the Southern Link Road, built in 1985, was adapted to the current traffic volume of the prospering economic region (more than 30,000 vehicles per day). The core element of this infrastructure project is the extension of the existing Carrington Bridge into a two-lane bridge.

Innovative weathering steel in use

If this bridge is making headlines, this has less to do with its appearance than with its highly innovative character.

In fact, the innovative weathering structural steel S460K2W+M has been used for the first time in Great Britain for the production of the bridge main girders, diaphragms and stiffeners. Compared to conventional materials, this steel has a higher corrosion resistance combined with higher strength. Due to the higher minimum yield strength of the steel, the plate thicknesses within the bridge were reduced, so that the weight of the bridge was reduced by about 15 to 20 %. The number of piers has also been reduced from five to two, resulting in further savings through reduced material usage, while improving future maintenance of the structure.

For this innovative bridge, Dillinger supplied 60 plates (866 t) of its brand steel DIWETEN 460+M in thicknesses ranging from 16 to 50 mm, up to 3.43 m wide and 21.31 m long.
