The new Queen Maxima Bridge (Dutch: Maximabrug) in the Netherlands was opened to traffic on 6 April 2017. This bascule bridge spans the Oude Rijn at Alphen aan den Rijn. Two bridge segments, which can be opened and closed, permit the passage even of vessels with high superstructures.
The Maxima Bridge is, simultaneously, a pioneering structure, being sustainable thanks to the skilful use of materials and of renewable energy. Solar collectors supply the energy needed for opening the bridge, for lighting, and for the necessary traffic signals. Natural water-preparation systems create a clean-water zone.
In social sustainability terms, too, the Maxima Bridge is, again, a modern structure assuring safe transit for pedestrian and cyclists, combined with a vantage point offering views of the surrounding polder landscape.
