Heavy plate from Dillinger paves the way to a sustainable future.
With a capacity of 1,300 megawatts, the Hornsea 2 wind farm currently occupies first place in the ranking of the largest offshore wind farms worldwide. It is located next to its brother Hornsea 1, for which Dillinger also supplied 99,000 t of heavy plate. It comprises 165 wind turbines located 89 km off the Yorkshire coast, helping to supply over 1.4 million UK homes with cheap, clean and safe renewable energy. Together with Hornsea 1, they can therefore power up to 2.5 million homes, making a significant contribution to the UK government’s ambition of having 50 GW offshore wind in operation by 2030.
Hornsea 2 covers an area of 462 km2 - the equivalent of more than 64,000 football pitches. The 165 Siemens Gamesa 8MW turbines rise around 200 metres from sea level. With a rotor diameter of 167 m, the 81-metre-long rotor blades cover by rotating an area as large as the total span of an Airbus A380. A single round of the wind turbine blades takes six seconds and provides enough energy to power a household for a day.
The wind turbines stand in water depths of 30 to 40 m (82 to 98 ft) on monopile foundations. For these foundations and for the towers, Dillinger supplied approx. 125,000 t of heavy plate in thicknesses from 18 to 110 mm.
