We use a numerically controlled plate-edge milling machine that reliably generates edges free of overhardening for ultra-precise machining of your plates. We therefore deliver to you plates completely ready for use and with their weld edges ready prepared in accordance with your wishes. Not only right-angled external contours, but also trapezoidal and arc-shaped cuts are possible. Your plates can also be bent precisely to the specified radius prior to delivery, or blast descaled and protectively treated for immediate use on your site.
Whether large-format components for foundation plates, press foundation frames, flange rings, racks for drilling platforms or tube plates for pressure-vessels and boilers – we can supply the correctly fitting cut-to-size plate.
We cut your plates precisely to accord with your design drawings using numerically controlled coordinate cutting machines, and with prepared weld edges, if required.
Straightening on hydraulic presses makes it possible to achieve flatness specifications better than those stated in the standards for the grade of steel. Stress-relieving annealing and machining of the components is also possible.
We can supply hemispherical heads for vessels, torispherical heads in accordance with DIN 28013, elliptical heads (in accordance with the ASME code, for example) and flat heads – all of them single-piece, with no welds.
These heads are all produced at Dillingen by means of hot forming using die, drawing ring and, where necessary, hold-downs, as the forming tools. Multi-purpose presses applying up to 2,500 t of forming force are used for this.
(The supply range provides information on the standard geometries, diameters and wall thicknesses in which the heads are produced; intermediate sizes and other head geometries can also be supplied, provided the necessary tooling is available).
Any heads or pressings which cannot be made in one piece can be produced for you at Dillinger in the form of ready-for-installation segments. Upon agreement, these designs can also be delivered test-assembled or welded. Our range includes torispherical heads (in accordance with DIN 28011 and DIN 28013) and hemispherical heads. Other component geometries can also be produced ready-for-installation from multiple plate elements, including transition pieces, toricones, and domes for hot-blast stoves, for example.
Weld preparation generally takes the form of oxy-fuel flame cutting for conventional welding processes, or machined edges for narrow-gap welding. We use press tools with profiles that match the particular head contour for forming. The segments are cold or hot formed, depending on the necessary degree of deformation.
For your high-capacity spherical tanks we supply ready-for-installation segments in normalised, thermomechanically rolled or water quenched and tempered grades of steel.
We agree optimum sphere division and the size of the segments with you to accord with the available production facilities, transportation conditions and on-site working and welding capacities.
Our Heavy Fabrication division's know-how and experience ensure high fitting accuracy for your segments, to assure trouble-free on-site fitting-up and welding, with no trial assembly.
Our large-format tools permit homogeneous forming of the segments, which are either hot or cold dished, depending on the degree of deformation. Weld edges are prepared by means of oxy-fuel cutting, followed by grinding.

We use a high-performance four-roll plate bending machine with a forming force of 8,600 t and a cylindrical length of 4300 mm for forming of shell plates.
This machine is equipped with three interchangeable rolls, of diameters 880 mm, 1,200 mm and 1,500 mm, and was conceived specifically for cold forming of heavy plates consisting of high-strength steels with a yield strength of above 500 MPa, as an alternative to forged shell courses.
Hot forming can also be performed, depending on component dimensions and the particular material, with subsequent heat treatment, including water-quenching and tempering, where required. The submerged-arc process with up to three electrodes is used for welding.
We offer approvals in accordance with both German and international codes of practice; our Heavy Fabrication division is, inter alia, a stamp holder in accordance with ASME I, VIII-1 and VIII-2.
Shell courses can also be supplied tack welded.
In addition to welded shell courses, we also supply shell sections with no longitudinal weld. These products are also formed to meet your needs on our four-roll plate bending machine and can also be delivered with weld edges ready prepared (flame-cut and milled for circular welding).
We can also supply welded components to meet your needs, in accordance with EN 1090, or other standards and codes, for example. Dillinger's Heavy Fabrication division is qualified for the performance of welding work under a large range of codes and standards. The division's equipment and technical capabilities permit the fabrication of welded components up to individual weights of 70 tonnes. One typical application for such welded components are iron and steel plant equipment, including steel-teeming ladles, scrap chutes, and similar items.
Special parts can be supplied using the Heavy Fabrication division's potentials and also those of other Dillinger sectors. Examples include turned edges on rotationally symmetrical parts, and three-dimensional flame cutting using a cutting robot. Other machining operations such as milling and drilling, for example, may also be possible with the involvement of Dillinger's partner companies.
A special Dillinger service is the straightening, on agreement, of your structural parts should this be necessary.
Heat treatment operations can also be performed to your specifications in our range of heat-treatment furnaces. These also permit water quenching, followed by tempering, and stress-relieving annealing.
